Japan allows travelers over 20 to bring 3 bottles of alcohol (each up to 760ml, total 2.28L) duty-free. Quantities above this face customs duty and liquor tax. Japan has no restrictions on alcohol types — spirits, wine, and beer all count toward the 3-bottle limit.
Duty-free per adult: 3 bottles of alcohol (each 760ml, total ~2.28L), 400 foreign cigarettes or 100 cigars or 500g tobacco (doubled in 2019), 2 oz/56g perfume. Other goods: total market value not exceeding JPY 200,000 (~$1,820 USD). Items brought back as souvenirs are assessed at 60% of overseas price for duty calculation.
No special procedure is required for personal quantities of alcohol / spirits arriving in Japan. Quantities above duty-free allowances must still be declared. Verify current limits with Japan Customs (Ministry of Finance).
