Full details

Brazil requires declaration of cash and monetary instruments exceeding BRL 10,000 (approximately USD 2,000) or equivalent in foreign currency when entering or leaving. The Receita Federal enforces this at all ports of entry. Brazil has strict capital controls. Enforcement in Brazil carries fines from BRL 500 to BRL 50,000 under Decreto-Lei 37/1966; Regulamento Aduaneiro (Decreto 6.759/2009); Código Penal Art. 334 (ordinary personal cases are handled as civil infringements). Leaving Brazil with cash / currency is a separate question — restricted: Brazil requires electronic Declaração de Porte de Valores (e-DBV) for cash over BRL 10,000 equivalent on departure. Failure to declare results in confiscation plus 150% fine.

PENALTIES

  • Fine: 500–50000 BRL
  • Civil penalty only

Under BACEN Resolution 4,748 and RFB Normative Instruction 1,059, travellers must file an e-DBV (electronic Declaração de Porte de Valores) before departure for BRL 10,000 or more (or USD equivalent). The e-DBV is submitted online via the Receita Federal portal. Undeclared amounts above the threshold are confiscated plus a fine of 150% of the undeclared sum. Outbound wire transfers above USD 10,000 require PCE (Programa de Câmbio Estrangeiro) reporting via an authorised bank.

Values at or above this threshold must be declared (BRL).
