Overview
Chile's customs administration is the Servicio Nacional de Aduanas (SNA), an agency under the Ministry of Finance. Operations run at Santiago Arturo Merino BenÃtez (SCL) and regional international airports; the Pacific ports of San Antonio (the country's largest by container volume), ValparaÃso, Iquique (with associated free trade zone), Antofagasta, Arica, and Puerto Montt; and land border crossings with 3 neighbours: Argentina (numerous, most notably Los Libertadores/Cristo Redentor near Mendoza), Bolivia (Chungará-Tambo Quemado), and Peru (Chacalluta near Arica).
Arriving travellers complete the Tarjeta Única Migratoria (TUM) and SNA customs declaration. The personal allowance is goods up to USD 500 per adult, plus 2.5 litres of alcohol and 400 cigarettes. Foreign nationals from most countries enter visa-free for tourism (typically 90 days).
For commercial imports, SNA operates Sistema de Declaración de Ingreso integrated electronic customs declaration platform. Importers register with SNA and file electronic declarations. Chile's customs framework is regarded as among the most efficient in Latin America.
Chile's import-duty structure applies MFN per the Chilean tariff (typically 6% flat) — one of the world's simplest tariff structures — IVA at 19% at import, and Specific Tax on selected luxuries (motor vehicles, alcohol, tobacco). Under Chile's extensive FTA network, most commercial imports from major trading partners qualify for 0% preferential rate.
Tariff policy: Chile has one of the world's most extensive FTA networks: CPTPP, RCEP (accession in negotiation), Chile-US FTA, Chile-EU Association Agreement (modernised 2023), Chile-China FTA, Chile-India Preferential Trade Agreement, Chile-Korea FTA, Chile-Japan EPA, Chile-Canada FTA, Chile-Mexico FTA, Chile-Mercosur Association Agreement, Chile-EFTA FTA, Chile-Türkiye FTA, Chile-Vietnam FTA, Chile-Thailand FTA, Chile-Australia FTA, Chile-Malaysia FTA, Chile-Hong Kong FTA, Pacific Alliance (with Colombia, Mexico, Peru), and many bilateral arrangements. Chile's FTA network covers over 65 economies representing more than 88% of world GDP.
Some product categories require additional clearance. ISP (Instituto de Salud Pública) regulates pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, and food. SAG (Servicio AgrÃcola y Ganadero) handles SPS. SUBTEL type-approves radio equipment. Sernapesca handles fisheries.
Chile's export economy is dominated by copper (Chile is the world's largest copper producer via Codelco and BHP-operated Escondida), lithium (from the Salar de Atacama), fresh fruit and salmon, wine, and forestry products.
Currency declarations are required above USD 10,000 equivalent on entry or exit.
Some categories are enforced: cultural artifacts, CITES products (particularly guanaco and vicuña wildlife products), drugs and narcotics (though Chile's penalties are less severe than some regional neighbours).
Chile has notably strict biosecurity for a Latin American country: personal-import of fresh fruit, meat, and plant material attracts significant enforcement particularly at Santiago Airport and Los Libertadores land crossing. Undeclared fresh produce results in on-the-spot fines.
Postal-import handling is via Correos Chile. Above the de minimis (USD 41 per shipment for parcels below which no duty applies), IVA and duty are collected on delivery.
Prescription-medication carriage follows a personal-use framework: prescribed medication accompanied by the prescription is generally accepted; controlled drugs require ISP advance authorisation.
Recent regulatory changes include the modernised Chile-EU Association Agreement (2023, adding services and government procurement), the ongoing RCEP accession discussions, continued Pacific Alliance integration, and the Chile-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations progressing 2024-2026.

Known scams
- Fake 'Servicio Nacional de Aduanas' email asking the recipient to pay duty in advance for an arriving parcel. Chilean customs duty is paid at the courier counter or via the courier's authenticated portal, never via cold email. aduana.cl
- Taxi-overcharging at Santiago Airport — illegitimate drivers ferry arriving passengers without taximeter and overcharge 3-5×. Use the official taxi counter inside the terminal or rideshare apps. aeropuertosantiago.cl

Frequently asked questions
How much alcohol can I bring into Chile duty-free?
Travellers arriving in Chile may bring 2.5 L of alcohol duty-free. Anything above the allowance must be declared at the red channel. Travelers aged 18+ may bring 2.5 L of alcohol, 400 cigarettes / 500 g loose tobacco / 50 cigars duty-free. Personal goods up to USD 500 (USD 3,000 for returning Chilean residents under Transfer of Residence).
How many cigarettes can I bring into Chile?
400 cigarettes per traveller (or proportionally less in cigars / tobacco). Above-limit tobacco must be declared.
Do I need to declare cash entering Chile?
Yes. Cash and equivalent bearer instruments above USD 10000 (USD) must be declared on arrival.
What is Chile's de minimis import threshold?
30 USD (~USD 30). Personal-import parcels under USD 30 duty-free; above attracts 6% customs duty + 19% IVA. Chile has bilateral FTAs with US, EU, China, etc.; preferential rates for qualifying goods.
Is VAT or GST charged on imports into Chile?
IVA 19%. Applied to imports plus customs duty (typically 6% MFN; 0% for FTA partners — Chile has one of the world's widest FTA networks). Plus Specific Tax on luxuries (vehicles, alcohol, tobacco).
Can I bring prescription medication into Chile?
Prescription medicines for personal use are generally allowed in reasonable quantities (typically 30-90 days' supply), accompanied by the original prescription and ideally a doctor's letter. Some controlled substances need import authorisation. Verify with Servicio Nacional de Aduanas for your specific medicine.
Can I send gifts by post to Chile?
Gifts are accepted by post but are still subject to Chile's import rules. Tax-relief gift thresholds (where they exist) are typically much lower than commercial thresholds. Declare honestly on the CN22/CN23 — undervaluation is treated as fraud.
What documents do I need to import commercially into Chile?
A customs declaration filed with Servicio Nacional de Aduanas, a commercial invoice, packing list, and transport document (AWB or B/L). Add a Certificate of Origin to claim FTA preferential duty. Sector-specific imports (food, plants, animals, medicines, electronics, dangerous goods) need additional permits.
What happens at Chile's red and green channels?
The green channel is for travellers with nothing to declare. The red channel is for travellers carrying anything above allowances or any restricted goods. Spot checks happen at both. Lying or hiding goods can lead to seizure plus penalties.
What items are prohibited in Chile?
Narcotics; Counterfeit goods; CITES-listed species. See the full prohibited list on this page.
What items are restricted into Chile?
Firearms (Carabineros permit); Pharmaceuticals (ISP permit); Pets (SAG veterinary cert). Restricted items typically need a permit, certificate, or declaration. See the full restricted list on this page.
How do I declare goods on arrival in Chile?
Use the red channel at the airport. Most ports of entry into Chile accept either a paper declaration or, increasingly, an electronic declaration via an app or kiosk. Be ready to show receipts, prescriptions, or permits.
Can I bring food into Chile?
Most countries restrict animal-origin food (meat, dairy) for biosecurity reasons; sealed commercial packaged food is sometimes permitted. Verify with Servicio Nacional de Aduanas's agricultural / biosecurity authority before bringing food.
Can I bring vape devices or e-cigarettes into Chile?
Vape rules are changing fast worldwide; Chile may have specific restrictions, age limits, or outright bans. Verify on the current Servicio Nacional de Aduanas guidance before travel — bans have grown markedly since 2023.
Can I bring medicines containing controlled substances into Chile?
Many countries require advance import authorisation for opioids, stimulants, and certain psychiatric medicines. Carry the original prescription, doctor's letter, and original packaging. For controlled substances, contact Chile's health authority before travel.
Are duty-free purchases on arrival counted in my allowance?
Yes. Duty-free purchases at the destination airport on arrival count toward your alcohol and tobacco allowance, even though they were purchased after immigration. Buying duty-free at departure rather than arrival does not bypass the allowance.
What happens if a parcel arrives over Chile's de minimis?
Above the de minimis, customs assesses duty and VAT/GST on the goods value (plus, in some regimes, freight + insurance). The carrier or postal operator usually clears it and bills the recipient. Recipients can refuse delivery if they don't want to pay.
Can I refuse to pay duties and return a parcel?
Yes. If you don't want to pay duties or taxes, you can refuse the parcel and the carrier will return it to sender or destroy it. This does not affect your tax record but means the goods don't enter Chile.
How long does customs clearance take in Chile?
Standard clearance for compliant parcels is typically same-day to a few days. Holds for incomplete declarations, biosecurity inspection, sanctions screening, or anti-counterfeit checks can take longer. Provide complete declarations to avoid delays.
Who do I contact if my parcel is held by Chile customs?
Your carrier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, postal operator) is the first contact — they handle clearance on your behalf. If you need to deal directly with the authority, contact Servicio Nacional de Aduanas via the contact route on their official site.
What are common customs scams to watch for in Chile?
Watch for: fake "customs fees" demands by SMS or email; impostor officials at airports; unsolicited phone calls about a "stuck parcel"; payment requests by gift card. Real customs authorities do not ask for payment via SMS link or gift cards. See our scams page for documented patterns.
Verify against Servicio Nacional de Aduanas before acting on any answer. Customs rules change frequently.
