Taking cash / currency out of Egypt
Egypt limits cash export. EGP 5,000 maximum local currency on departure. Foreign currency up to USD 10,000 may depart if declared on arrival. Above requires CBE documentation.
Details
Under Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) regulations and Customs Law, Egyptian pounds (EGP) export is capped at EGP 5,000 per traveller. Foreign currency may be exported up to the amount declared on arrival (maximum USD 10,000 cash without supplementary bank documentation). Amounts above USD 10,000 require CBE authorisation and proof of import or bank purchase receipt. Penalties: fines under Law 88/2003 (Central Bank and Banking Sector Law) and customs violation fines.

Documentation required
- Customs Currency Declaration Form (submitted at departure for USD 10,000+)
- Bank purchase certificate for FX above threshold
- Original arrival currency declaration form
