Turkey monitors gold imports closely due to economic policy. Personal gold jewellery worn on arrival is generally not questioned. New gold purchases or unworn gold above 15,000 TRY must be declared. Turkey is a major gold market — the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the world's largest gold trading centers.
Leaving Turkey with gold jewellery
Under Turkish Customs Law No. 4458 and CBRT Bylaw on Cross-Border Precious Metals, individuals may export up to 5 kg of gold jewellery per trip without documentation. Above 5 kg, a formal customs declaration and CBRT approval letter are required. Exporters must provide proof of lawful acquisition (invoice or inheritance document). Unprocessed gold (bullion/ore) export requires Mining Law compliance and MTA (Mineral Research Authority) certificate. Commercial gold exports channel through the Istanbul Stock Exchange Precious Metals Market (IAB).
Declare gold jewellery at customs on arrival in Turkey and carry any documentation specified in the rule. Verify current requirements with Ministry of Trade — General Directorate of Customs (Gümrük ve Ticaret Bakanlığı) before travel.
