Returning home as an expat
If you're moving back to your home country after living abroad, you may be eligible for returning-resident or personal-effects exemptions on household goods. Rules vary widely.
Checklist
- 01
Check your home country's customs authority for 'returning resident' or 'transfer of residence' provisions — most offer reduced duty on household goods owned for a minimum period.
- 02
Prepare an itemised inventory with approximate values (many authorities require this).
- 03
Identify any items that are always dutiable regardless of residency status (new purchases, alcohol over allowance, tobacco, vehicles).
- 04
If shipping household goods separately, check whether you need to be present at port of entry for the unaccompanied baggage declaration.
- 05
Keep proof of overseas residence (utility bills, lease, employer letter) for the customs claim.
