Taking cash / currency out of Malaysia
Malaysia requires declaration of MYR 10,000 or USD 10,000 equivalent on departure. Export above declaration threshold requires Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) approval.
Details
Under Malaysia's Financial Services Act 2013 and BNM Exchange Control Notices, travellers must declare MYR 10,000 or USD 10,000 equivalent in any currency on departure. Malaysian Ringgit export above MYR 10,000 requires BNM Authorised Dealer approval. Foreign currency export above USD 50,000 equivalent requires formal exchange control permission from BNM. Penalties: fines up to MYR 5 million and/or 5 years imprisonment under Financial Services Act 2013 s. 214.
