Full details

Taxidermied specimens of CITES-listed species require both export permits from the source country and import permits from the destination country. CITES Appendix I species (tigers, leopards, bears, etc.) are commercially prohibited. Appendix II species (lions, hippos, many raptors) require permits. Enforcement in Thailand carries fines from THB 5,000 to THB 500,000 under Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017) s.202, s.242 (ordinary personal cases are handled as civil infringements). Leaving Thailand with taxidermy is a separate question — restricted: Taxidermy export from Thailand depends on the species — CITES-listed specimens need export permits; common non-protected species need provenance paperwork.

PENALTIES

  • Fine: 5000–500000 THB
  • Civil penalty only

Leaving Thailand with taxidermy

RESTRICTEDTaxidermy export from Thailand depends on the species — CITES-listed specimens need export permits; common non-protected species need provenance paperwork.

Taxidermy of CITES-listed species (big cats, bears, raptors, marine turtles, and hundreds of others) requires a CITES export permit from Thailand's management authority before cross-border movement, plus a destination import permit for Appendix I specimens. Non-listed common species (many deer, boar, common fish) move on provenance paperwork alone, but several destinations also apply biosecurity treatment-certificate requirements to any animal product (Australia and New Zealand require treatment certification). Hunting-trophy exports additionally follow the origin country's game-export tagging rules.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Thailand restricts import of Taxidermy. Cultural-property protection is bilateral: both origin export rules and destination import rules apply. Carry provenance documentation demonstrating lawful acquisition and (where applicable) origin-country export licence. Museum-loan and dealer-import categories operate under separate frameworks with pre-approved dealer registration.
