Australian Border Force operates the SmartGate / eGate system for e-passport holders plus staffed counters. Incoming Passenger Card mandatory for every arrival (yellow form). Biosecurity (Department of Agriculture) inspection is universal — all food, plant, animal items must be declared regardless of origin or value.

Transit

SYD T1 handles international; T2/T3 handle domestic. International-to-domestic transfers require full biosecurity + customs clearance and bag recheck at T2/T3. Inter-terminal T-Bus (paid) takes 15-20 minutes; walking not possible.

Known quirks

  • Biosecurity enforcement is the strictest among English-speaking countries — undeclared food carries a A$2,664 infringement notice on first offence
  • SmartGate available for AU, NZ, UK, US, CA, IE, JP, KR, SG, CH, FR, DE, IT, ES, NL, SE, NO, DK, FI, BE, LU, IS passport holders age 10+
  • International-to-domestic transfers allow minimum 60 min (same-day ticketed); reality is usually 90+
