Taking xanax / alprazolam out of United States

STATUS · RESTRICTED

Xanax (alprazolam) is a controlled benzodiazepine subject to personal-export limits when leaving United States.

Details

Alprazolam is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the US and equivalent schedules in most other jurisdictions. Personal-use quantities accompanied by the prescription and doctor's letter are generally permitted for export under 21 USC § 956 (personal-use exception); DEA Diversion regulations. Above these limits, an DEA Form 236 (for Schedule II above personal-use limit) is required in advance. Destination-country rules on benzodiazepine import are more restrictive in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and several other jurisdictions — verify independently before travel.
