DEPARTURE RULE🇯🇵 JAPAN

Taking gold jewellery out of Japan

STATUS · ALLOWED

Personal gold jewellery may be exported from Japan for personal use; commercial quantities and gold bullion require declaration.

Details

Personal-wear gold jewellery is generally free to export from Japan at reasonable personal-use quantities. High-value personal jewellery (typically above USD 10,000 equivalent) should be declared on Declaration for Carrying Cash Form at customs since jewellery counts toward cash-equivalent thresholds in some jurisdictions. Gold bullion, bars, and coins face different treatment: they may require an advance export authorisation from the central bank or securities regulator for commercial quantities. Antique jewellery over the applicable cultural-property age threshold (typically 100 years) may require an export permit from the cultural-affairs authority.

Quantity limits

Personal wearable jewellery generally free; commercial-quantity or bullion requires declaration

Documentation required

  • Purchase receipts (for high-value personal jewellery)
  • Cultural export permit for antique pieces
