Taking collectible coins (numismatic) out of United States
The US imposes no general export restriction on collectible coins; normal customs-value declaration rules apply.
Details
Collectible and bullion coins may be exported from the US without a licence. Monetary instruments rules apply to legal-tender face value rather than numismatic value, but high-value shipments should be declared for insurance and, above USD 10,000 in monetary instruments, on FinCEN Form 105. Note that some destination countries treat ancient coins as cultural property with import restrictions (and US import of certain ancient coins is itself restricted under CPIA bilateral agreements).
Quantity limits
No export limit; FinCEN 105 if legal-tender value exceeds USD 10,000
Documentation required
- Purchase/provenance invoices for high-value coins
