Details

India requires professional cameras and associated equipment (multiple lenses, lighting, tripods, large sensor video cameras) to be declared at customs upon arrival. Professional photographic equipment is subject to import duty unless the traveller can prove temporary importation for personal use. An ATA Carnet (international customs document) is strongly recommended for professional equipment. Without a Carnet, customs may require a temporary importation deposit equivalent to the duty payable (up to 28% + GST). News crews and film crews must obtain Ministry of Information and Broadcasting credentials. Tourism photographers with a single DSLR and one or two lenses are rarely challenged.

Practical advice
