Portable solar panels are freely allowed into the US; panels with integrated lithium batteries must follow FAA carry-on lithium battery rules.

Details

CBP imposes no specific restrictions on portable solar panels for personal use. Panels without integrated batteries (most foldable camping panels) are treated as standard electronics — no duty for personal use under 19 CFR 148. Panels with integrated rechargeable lithium batteries (some all-in-one units) must comply with FAA 49 CFR Part 175: batteries under 100Wh in carry-on or checked baggage; batteries 100-160Wh in carry-on only with airline approval. No declaration required unless total goods value exceeds personal exemption.

Practical advice

For panels without batteries, stow in checked or carry-on luggage normally. For panels with integrated batteries, check the watt-hour rating on the label and carry in your carry-on bag if over 100Wh.
