Purpose: Traveling · Verified: 2026-04-24
Portable solar panels are allowed into the UK with no specific restrictions; integrated lithium batteries follow standard UK/IATA aviation rules.
Details
HMRC and UK Border Force impose no specific restrictions on portable solar panels. Standard foldable panels (no battery) are treated as electronics/sporting goods and are duty-free for personal use within the £390 travellers' allowance. Panels with integrated lithium batteries must comply with UK Civil Aviation Authority guidance implementing IATA DGR: batteries under 100Wh permitted in carry-on and hold; 100-160Wh carry-on only with airline approval. High-watt solar generators (over 160Wh integrated) are unlikely to be permitted on passenger aircraft.
Quantity limit
Personal use; total goods under £390 are duty-free

Practical advice
For battery-integrated panels, check the watt-hour rating and carry in your carry-on if it exceeds 100Wh. Declare the item to Border Force if it pushes your total goods over £390.
