Details

CBP permits personal electronic devices including e-readers (Kindle, Kobo, etc.) duty-free for travellers. The lithium battery integrated into the device is governed by FAA/IATA Dangerous Goods regulations: batteries must remain in the device or be in carry-on luggage if spare; batteries over 100Wh require airline approval. A standard e-reader battery (approx. 1-3Wh) is well within all limits. No duty applies under CBP's personal exemption rules for items clearly for personal use.

Practical advice

No action needed for a single personal e-reader. Keep it in your carry-on bag. If bringing multiple sealed units, be prepared to explain they are for personal use to CBP.
