Leaving Indonesia with coral & seashells

RESTRICTEDIndonesia restricts export of CITES-listed coral species and protected seashells. KLHK CITES permit required for protected specimens. Personal souvenir quantities of unprotected shells may depart.

Under Indonesia's Law 5/1990 and KLHK Decree on Protected Species, CITES Appendix I and II coral species and protected seashells (including Tridacna gigas — giant clam) require a KLHK export permit and LIPI/BRIN non-detriment finding for export. Unprotected common shells in clearly personal souvenir quantities (a few shells, obviously not commercial) may depart without documentation. Commercial quantities of any shell require Quarantine and customs declaration. Penalties: 5 years imprisonment for protected species export without permit.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Carry documentation. Declare proactively at customs.
