Details

Italy follows the EU Cash Control Regulation 1889/2005: travelers entering or leaving the EU with cash or monetary instruments worth EUR 10,000 or more must declare on the EU Cash Declaration Form to Agenzia delle Dogane. Undeclared amounts are subject to 30-50% administrative fine plus seizure proceedings under the Italian Anti-Money-Laundering Law (D.Lgs. 231/2007). Intra-EU travel does not require declaration but customs may still spot-check.

Practical advice

Declare cash, traveler's cheques, or monetary instruments above the local threshold to Agenzia delle Dogane on arrival or departure. Use the dedicated currency-declaration channel; undeclared amounts above the threshold are subject to seizure and an administrative fine of 25-50% of the undeclared sum.
