Leaving Japan with antiquities
Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkacho) administers export controls under Law 214/1950. Items designated as Important Cultural Properties (Juyo Bunkazai) or National Treasures (Kokuho) are prohibited from permanent export. Export of Important Art Objects requires a permit from Bunkacho. General antiques not designated under national law may be exported freely but must comply with standard customs export declaration. Japan is a UNESCO 1970 Convention signatory.
General antiques are fine. Items designated as Important Cultural Properties are export-restricted.
