Purpose: Traveling · Verified: 2026-04-25
Prohibited. Amphetamine-based medications are banned narcotics in the UAE.
Details
Adderall contains amphetamine salts which are listed as prohibited narcotics under UAE Federal Law No. 14 of 1995. Unlike some other controlled medications in the UAE where a MOHAP permit allows limited importation, amphetamine-based stimulants are not permissible under any circumstances, including with a valid foreign prescription. Travellers have been arrested at Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah airports for carrying Adderall. Penalties include imprisonment and deportation. Non-stimulant ADHD medications such as Strattera (atomoxetine) may be permitted with proper MOHAP documentation.

At the airport
- Amphetamine-based medications including Adderall are prohibited in the UAE under Federal Law No. 14 of 1995. If you arrive with Adderall, proceed to the Red Channel at DXB or AUH.
- Declare the medication and present your home-country prescription and physician's letter. These provide context but do not exempt you from UAE law.
- The medication will be confiscated. Criminal charges may follow. Contact your embassy (US Embassy Abu Dhabi: +971-2-414-2200) immediately if detained.
Transit
Transit not permitted. The UAE prohibits amphetamine-based medications including Adderall under Federal Law No. 14 of 1995. This prohibition applies to all persons in UAE territory including those on airside transit at DXB. No transit exception exists for amphetamines.
Surrender at customs
MOHAP/Dubai Customs accept voluntary surrender of prohibited medications including amphetamines. Declare proactively at primary inspection. Written abandonment request submitted to customs officer. Receipt issued. Proactive disclosure significantly reduces risk of prosecution under UAE Federal Law No. 14/1995 — legal advice still recommended.
Practical advice
Do not bring Adderall or any amphetamine to the UAE. Consult your doctor about non-stimulant ADHD alternatives and carry MOHAP documentation for those. Check the MOHAP controlled medicines list before packing any prescription medication.
