Full Details

Australia's Biosecurity Act 2015 requires permits for all imported dairy. Mailed parcels must declare the contents; Australian Border Force / DAFF inspect every parcel flagged as containing food or dairy. Commercial UHT and shelf-stable retail-packed milk from approved countries may pass with documentation; soft cheese, raw milk, and any unapproved-origin dairy are seized and destroyed regardless of quantity. Non-declared dairy in postal parcels triggers AUD 444 infringement notice.

PENALTIES

  • Fine: 4440โ€“1650000 AUD
  • Imprisonment up to 120 months
  • Statute: Customs Act 1901 s.233BAB (prohibited imports); Criminal Code Act 1995 s.307 (drug importation)
  • Attempted postal-import of prohibited goods triggers seizure and criminal prosecution up to 10 years for controlled drugs under Criminal Code s.307. Biosecurity Act penalties up to AUD 1.65M for corporations; personal fines AUD 4,440 minimum.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Do not post dairy products to Australia. Biosecurity actively screens mail.
