Customs notes

Japan Customs uses a single paper declaration form (Customs Form C No. 5360) required from every arriving passenger (not just those with goods to declare). Personal allowance: 200 cigarettes + 3 bottles alcohol (760 ml each) + ¥200,000 total goods value. Cash ≥¥1,000,000 declaration required.

Transit

Narita has two terminals (T1, T2) plus a low-cost T3. International-to-international transit is airside within same terminal. Inter-terminal transfer requires free shuttle bus (15 min). Minimum connection 60 min same terminal, 90 min between.

Pre-arrival apps / forms

  • Visit Japan Web (quarantine + immigration + customs)
  • Yakkan-Shoumei (medication import permit)

Known quirks

  • Declaration form is mandatory for every passenger including those with nothing to declare
  • Controlled drug list (stimulants + narcotics including Adderall and codeine over certain thresholds) requires Yakkan-Shoumei certificate in advance
  • Visit Japan Web (online arrival + customs declaration) pilot now accepts QR code at NRT immigration — faster than paper
