Customs notes

Hong Kong Customs and Excise operates red / green channel system. Hong Kong has no general import duty or GST, but dutiable goods (alcohol >30% ABV, tobacco, hydrocarbon oils, methyl alcohol) require declaration. Free allowance: 1L alcohol >30% ABV, 19 cigarettes.

Transit

HKIA is fully sterile for international-to-international and international-to-mainland China transit. Most transit passengers stay airside entirely. Landside access requires full immigration clearance. Terminal 1 has a satellite concourse (Midfield) reached via APM (Automated People Mover).

Pre-arrival apps / forms

  • Hong Kong e-Customs (commercial)
  • HK Immigration Department e-Channel (residents + frequent visitors)

Known quirks

  • Vaping products and heated tobacco entirely banned since 30 April 2022 — confiscation + fine up to HK$50,000
  • Only 19 cigarettes allowed duty-free (not 20) — a standard pack exceeds the allowance by one
  • Midfield concourse gates (500-series) require extra 15-20 minutes from main terminal via APM
